Mobile Web Site Strategy:
First, and perhaps more importantly for local businesses who are not ranking well on Google currently, investing in a Mobile Site will allow you to be found even better on a mobile device.
Did you know Google uses a totally different search platform for mobile? It’s true! Just type “m.Google.com” into your phone’s browser window instead of www.google.com.
Mobile sites will be served up first on this platform, if they exist. And THEN normal sites. Why? Because normal sites look absolutely clunky and horrendous on a mobile device. Lots and lots of scrolling is required to look at a normal site on a mobile device.
A mobile web site should be your first consideration, before an app, as it compliments everything Google is and does. Google is all about search and a mobile site is extremely important for mobile phone users. The site is formatted to their device, making it easier and faster to access the important information they are looking for. Also, apps do not show up in search. They are not web sites.
A mobile site should be simple, containing only the amount of information needed to inform the visitor and make a strong argument for your product or service. Responsive design in a direct manner is an absolute must.
The Mobile site should contain all of the important contact info necessary to allow the site visitor to quick be able to either contact you or to find you – via “tap to call” buttons or a Google map with directions. Yes, Google provides those as well in a free search, but remember, that are on your site! What more could you ask -indeed, why ask them to go back out to Google for a map? Give them what they need.
Coupons, Facebook and other social tools can also be built into the mix to provide even more incentive for a visit or service / product purchase. But use sparingly. Don’t overload the mobile site with unnecessary pages or widgets or imagery. The mobile user is usually also the speedy user. They are usually on the move and need info to make a decision.
Mobile App Strategy:
Mobile Apps should be used when a business has a healthy following of loyal customers who show up often at the business. The mobile app will allow them to build their business even stronger and better.
Here’s just one example – Tuesday night, 5:00pm the bar/restaurant is empty. The owner reaches for his smart phone, logs in and sends a “Push Technology” message out telling all of his loyal customers that tonight he is offering a $0.01 cent beer.
Within minutes his bar/restaurant is filled with people wanting to take advantage of the cheap, almost free, beer. However, 10 minutes later a miracle happens. All of those customers want to stay a little longer and order another beer. Then they start to get hungry and order some food.
Soon his lame-Tuesday turns into a great night of business. And that is only ONE way to use the 35 features that our apps can be loaded with.
